More “old-timer” HDA darts memories..
From the program we printed for the 1983 Houston Lowenbrau Open Tournament.
Lowenbrau Beer was our major corporate sponsor for this tournament. Because alcohol and cigarette companies were legally prohibited from directly sponsoring events, we printed event programs and sold advertising to the the corporate sponsors. This sponsorship loophole was closed in the early 90s.
Back in the 1980s, the version of Lowenbrau Beer sold in North America was brewed domestically under license by Miller with a different recipe from the current Munich, Germany beer. The Houston area Miller distributor was our actual corporate sponsor for the event.
These tournament were hugely popular. Because they were Sanctioned by the American Darts Organization (ADO), winners earned national ranking points. This brought many national-ranked and even well-known international darters to our Houston events.
